Kosta Boda’s commercial and artistic heart is in Småland, where the inspiring and highly creative work of product development takes place at the three glassworks of Kosta, Boda and Åfors. Since its 2003 start-up as an experimental workshop with an emphasis on public showings, Boda has become enormously popular with visitors, providing gallery seating and projectors giving a close-up view of the glassblowers at work in the hot-shop.
The high points of Kosta Boda’s 2005 Design Year will be the Stockholm Public Auctions Authority’s annual auction of Swedish glass to be held in Kosta’s new Glass Centre – more information about these events will be published on our website at www.kostaboda.com.
Contrast
Design Anna Ehrner
Glassy, artistic – this is Anna Ehrner at her best! Swirling veils of colour have become something of Anna’s personal trademark, and in Contrast they set off and stand out against each other in elegant contrast – hence the name. In the Contrast bowls, simple, pure shape bears up the patterns that bring out the inner nature of the glass, making every bowl unique. In spring 2005, Contrast comes in a new, smaller format, making it perfect for snacks, and in a fresh shade of lime. Previous colours are blue, white and black.
Lolly
Design Olle Brozén
A glimpse back in time to the designs and shapes of the 1950s inspired the new Lolly bowl series that breathes of contemporary Kosta Boda thanks to the exquisite, fruity sorbet hues. The white background colour adds harmony to the playful, graphic design. A generous bowl series suitable to top your table all spring and summer long.
Samoa
Design Anna Ehrner
Samoa, Anna Ehrner’s new vases named after the unspoilt island paradise in the central Pacific, is a natural development of the designer’s constant experiments with glass. Here, Anna Ehrner allows coloured glass to create its own unique patterns in a design of understated simplicity. The vases’ fresh colours are those of Samoa itself, with its rain forest, green mountains, volcanoes and sandy beaches. Samoa is available in hibiscus red, lime green, okra, turquoise and blue and features a robust edge that makes the new vases ideal for use in a practical setting.
Scribble
Design Olle Brozén
The simplest of shapes – the air bubble – meets colour and a black&white tangled pattern in a refined yet playful way in the style of Gunnel Sahlin. The splendidly colourful teardrop shapes are a continuation of Gunnel’s latest art glass collection and can be used as vases for a single flower or as personal, decorative items in a room. Scribble is Gunnel Sahlin’s first Kosta Boda product since taking leave as a professor from the University College of Arts Crafts and Design in Stockholm.
Starlight
Design Bertil Vallien
Home, Dancer and See are the lyrical titles of Bertil Vallien’s meditative new light sculptures inspired by an original design concept based on precise architecture. This new approach to artistic expression is based on the sculptural and abstract and demands more than a casual glance. The figures encapsulated in the glass beckon us to set out on our own inner voyage of discovery...
